Welcome

Hello there, curious mind

Whether you know it or not, you’ve stumbled across The Generalist’s hidden home. It’s a place that’s been called “one of the highest quality communities on the internet,” “an absurdly high-caliber braintrust,” and “web3’s best kept secret.”

BENEFITS

What members can expect

01

Valuable
connections

We want every member of the community to forge meaningful connections that steepen the trajectory of their professional lives. To make that happen, we study every member’s background, expertise, and interests so we can make curated introductions. Every month, you’re invited to participate in this tailored matchmaking. Think of it as a source of carefully-planned serendipity.

02

Insightful
conversations

We believe that great discourse widens our horizons and sharpens our ideas. As part of our community, you’re encouraged to jump into discussions about the most interesting topics in the tech world, whether that’s a new crypto project, a provocative investing thesis, or an intriguing growth company. All of these discussions are hosted on an intuitive, asynchronous platform that's respectful of your time and sanity.

03

Expert
talks

Much of our most important learning happens after we leave school. That’s particularly true in tech given the rapid rate of change. For members that never want to stop learning and improving, we host regular talks with tech’s most interesting and impressive practitioners. It’s an enduring curriculum, designed to help you think better and capitalize on change.

04

Impactful
investments

The best opportunities visit those with prepared minds. By learning and connecting with tech’s deepest thinkers and most ambitious builders, you’ll be exposed to investment opportunities that might not surface elsewhere. Whether investing is your life’s work or simply a passion project, you’ll have the chance to actively improve the craft.

TESTIMONIALS

A unique home

I came here for the great research and writing but stay here and continue to engage because of the community.

Ho Nam, Managing Director and Co-founder of Altos Ventures

It’s hard to say if The Generalist is a social network of the sharpest business minds or a professional network of the nicest and most values-driven people in tech. Of course, it’s both—as well as a kind of intellectual incubator for anyone looking to create and grow businesses.

David Phelps, Founder at Forum Education

The Generalist community has enriched my life, both personally & professionally. I’ve never seen another forum curate such a thoughtful, fun, and forward-thinking group of humans.

Next steps

Our process

We take building this community seriously and aim for membership to be maximally valuable. To do so, we ask every incoming member to complete an application sharing interests and goals. Here’s what the process looks like:

01

Reserve your place

By processing your payment, you’ll reserve your place in the community. If you aren’t accepted, no worries — you will get a full, prompt refund.

02

Receive the application

Once your payment has been received, you’ll get an email from The Generalist with details about our private application.

03

Share your interests

The application takes about 20 minutes to complete. It’s a chance to share your passions with us. We look for thoughtful, inquisitive people.

04

Submit

Once you’re done, just hit submit. We review every application carefully to make sure there’s a good fit on both sides. It takes us about 3 days to process.

05

Welcome. Hooray!

We email to let you know we think we’re a great match. You’ll get super-secret instructions about how to join your new community. If for some reason we don’t think we’re a fit, we’ll let you know why and issue a full refund. You can add to your application any time to be reconsidered.

Ethos

The values that define us

01
Play the long game

Play the
long game

The community exists to favorably bend the arc of your professional life over the next ten years. That doesn’t happen overnight. We prioritize long-term relationship building over short-term gains. We think in years and decades, not hours and days.

02
Voyage boldly

Voyage
boldly

We believe in leaning forward. We look for ways to participate and add value. When we are an expert, we are humble enough to open ourselves to new perspectives. When we are a beginner, we are bold enough to recognize our vantage affords us fresh eyes. Whatever the topic, we seek to contribute.

03
Change your mind

Change
your mind

We believe that changing one’s mind is a sign of strength and wisdom. It reflects open-mindness, intellectual honesty, and a willingness to examine concepts from first principles. This is a place for those that relish opportunities to revise and improve their thinking through conversation.

04
Give to receive

Give to
receive

We elevate each other. That manifests in ways large and small, whether it be responding to someone’s question or offering to help on a new project. Before looking to extract value, we consider how we can lift someone up with knowledge or support. We all improve together.

05
Embrace your inner wonk

Embrace your
inner wonk

We love the unusual and esoteric. The future is often hidden at such ragged edges. So we all might benefit, we share our singular obsessions — the obscure novel you just read, the sleepy business you’ve been digging into, the curious frontier market you’ve been researching. Great friendships and new ideas come from unexpected places.

06
Respect the FrieNDA

Respect
the FrieNDA

Our discussions operate beneath a cheery "cone of silence." Our talks may inform the strategic decisions we make and the knowledge we take out into the world — but we keep the specifics within the community. This is a private conversation among friends.

FAQ

Have questions?

If your question isn’t covered here, you can drop us a line at hey@readthegeneralist.com. We’d love to hear from you.

Why is there an application?

No single community works for everyone. This one is focused on being extremely valuable to the most thoughtful people building a career in tech. That includes investors, founders, operators, and researchers. Though we assess every application on its merits, we’re less of a fit for those at the very beginning of their careers or without a demonstrated interest in tech. An application helps us make sure there’s a good match on both sides.

Why is membership yearly?

This is a home for people that want to build meaningful, long lasting relationships. Monthly memberships run counter to our value of “Playing the long game.”

What happens if I’m not accepted?

You’ll be refunded fully. There’s no financial risk in reserving your spot. You’re also welcome to add information to your application if you think we should reconsider.

Once I’ve submitted my application, how long will it take to hear back?

It usually takes us 3 business days. We’re a small team though, so don’t worry if it takes a few extra days. If you haven’t heard back from us within a week, check your spam folder. If nothing’s gotten stuck, then shoot us a note at hey@readthegeneralist.com.

Can I expense my membership?

There's a good chance. The Generalist’s community is designed to make you smarter, more thoughtful, and better-connected. It's particularly well-suited to those working in tech or finance.

Do you have group memberships?

We do. Feel free to reach out to hey@readthegeneralist.com to bring your team onboard. As a note, each member of your group will still fill out a personal application. It’s an important part of how we get to know our members.

If I sign up as a paying member but choose not to join the community, are there any other benefits I can expect?

If you don’t plan to join the community, you’ll still receive benefits from being a member. Specifically, you’ll be able to access members-only events (these will be made available to all paying members, regardless of whether or not you are in the community), as well as special perks from time to time. An example of the latter is the recent Philosophical Foxes drop: paying members received an advantage whether they were in the community or not.
